The first steps to passing your driving test
You can apply for your Driving Licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday.
It is also possible to start to drive at the age of 16. To do this you must be getting Disability Living Allowance (mobility component) at the higher rate.
The Driving Test is now carried out in two parts the Theory Test followed by the Practical Test.
The Theory Test
This tests your knowledge of the Highway Code and has to be passed before sitting your Practical Test.
Taking your theory test.
The theory test comprises of two parts which have to be passed at the same time, multiple choice questions testing knowledge of the highway code and hazard perception.

The Practical Test
This is the test where your driving ability is tested from the knowledge you have learned from your Driving Instructor.
What will the test include?
At the start of the practical driving test, your driving examiner will ask you to read the number plate on a parked vehicle.
The distance requirement for the eyesight test is:
- 20 metres for vehicles displaying the new-style number plate
- 20.5 metres for vehicles displaying old-style number plates
After the eyesight test you will be asked two vehicle safety check questions, these questions and answers are covered throughout your driving training with Drivesafe School of Motoring.
You will then be examined on your general driving, 10 minutes of independent driving and on two reversing exercises (manoeuvres). The reversing exercises will be chosen from:
- reversing around a corner
- turn in the road (three point turn)
- reverse parking
You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.
